AMIR KHAN AND FREDDIE ROACH SPLIT, KHAN ANNOUNCEMENT DUE NEXT WEEK.

Following the announcement that Amir Khan has split with trainer  Freddie Roach after his July TKO loss to Danny Garcia. Khans now former trainer has spoken out about the terms which were set out for him by Khans team to keep on training the British jr welterweight. Check out my view on the situation

Speaking with www.boxingscene.com Roach said “They told me this, and  this is pretty good….they told me if I make Amir number one, and get rid of Manny and Chavez jr, they will still come back to me” “(they said) if were number one and you get rid of Manny and Chavez, we’ll  stay with you. I told them ‘I cant do that’ They asked me that question face to face and on the phone”

To be honest, I think you can see both sides of the argument in this  situation. For Roach, he has two extremely high profile boxers in Chavez jr & Pacquaio. It would not make business sense to leave them, as they are in bigger fights than Khan’s in and he has took Pacquaio to heights most people couldn’t even dream of in the boxing world. On the other hand, Pacquaio is coming to the end of his career now so he will only be training him for a few more fights at best, and Chavez jr’s work ethic is questionable. Should he have stuck with Khan, he could have attempted to put all his efforts into turning Khan into the next big PPV, P4P star. There is no bad on Roach’s part though, with him saying “Even though Amir is going in another direction, there are no hard feelings” and “I like Amir, I wish him all the best”

From Khan’s perspective, it’s natural at this point that he should want  a Hall of fame trainer like Freddie Roach, who has brought him a long way in his career from when he started training him following his infamous knockout loss to Breidis Prescott back in 2008. On the other hand, it is crucial that a trainer should pay full attention to a boxer training for any fight that they are fighting in, something which Khan did not feel happened in the run up to the Garcia fight, where he was sharing camps with Manny Pacquaio in the run up to his June fight with Timothy Bradley. On top of that, Roach’s offensive minded style of  training could have taken Khan to the limit of where he can be in the  boxing world with the style and technique level he has at the moment.

In my view Khan needs a defensive minded trainer to tidy up and improve  that area of his game. It has been heavily rumoured that Naazim Richardson could be next in line to train Khan, which would be a wise choice given the work Richardson did with Shane Mosley, alternatively, defensive minded coach Floyd Mayweather Sr could be a wise choice for Khan, so he can take the next step in his career.

Khan is due to make an announcement by next week on who his next  trainer will be, so stay tuned to find out more!
