“I understand the name that Miguel has and compared to me, he has fought some of the greats. I will take this opportunity to show the world that I am here for a reason and also that I’m here to stay…I feel it’s like more of Cotto needs to look out for me. Nonetheless, we have upped the intensity since this is the most intense fighter we have been up against,” stated regular WBA jr. middleweight champion Austin Trout, who talked more about his upcoming December 1 showdown with former champion Miguel Cotto. Check it out!
GM: First of all Austin, thanks very much for your time. I know how busy you will be with your fight preparations, but this is much appreciated. For a while now, you’ve been looking for a massive fight. After wins against Delvin Rodriguez and Loporto, how happy are you to finally secure a fighter like Miguel Cotto in the pound-for-pound top ten?
AT: It’s definitely a dream come true. This is where I wanna be, among the elite.
GM: Being the world champion, is it a somewhat strange situation for you to be considered the underdog in this fight?
AT: No, I understand the name that Miguel has and compared to me, he has fought some of the greats. I will take this opportunity to show the world that I am here for a reason and also that I’m here to stay.
GM: How has training gone for this fight? Have you changed any of your normal preparation in facing an opponent like Cotto, or is it a case of letting Miguel Cotto worry about the skills Austin Trout is bringing to the table?
AT: I feel it’s like more of Cotto needs to look out for me. Nonetheless, we have upped the intensity since this is the most intense fighter we have been up against. But more or less, we have kept it the same.
GM: Have you done much sparring for this fight? What fighters have you been working with to emulate Cotto’s style?
AT: We have aqcuired the help of Donyil Livingston and Lanardo Tyner to help with Cotto’s style.
GM: Do you feel this is the platform you need to really kick start your career and bring your name to the forefront of the boxing elite?
AT: I sure do. I feel that if you want to be the best, then you have to beat the best, and I believe Cotto is one of the best in my class.
GM: If you were to win this fight, who would you look to fight next? There are some massive fights at 154 pounds, including Canelo, Mayweather, or maybe Sergio Martinez.
AT: I want to be undisputed champion, so naturally I will be looking to fight Canelo next, but if not, I would love any of those names you just mentioned.
GM: With the fight being at MSG, do you feel this could have any impact with such a pro-Cotto crowd?
AT: No, not on me personally. I hope they don’t sway the judges, but I have been in this type of environment before, so I don’t believe I will be affected any way.
GM: How do you see this fight turning out?
AT: With my hand raised.
GM: Do you have any messages for your boxing fans out there?
AT: I appreciate all the love and support y’all have shown. Thank you for the loyalty. After defeating Cotto, I will continue to carry myself with class, as a champion should.
