“Yes I want good top ten fighters for Tyson that he will develop from. Not push overs. If I think Tyson’s going to KO an opponent I will pick another as I’m interested in Tyson getting rounds. Not looking good with quick KOs……Yes the winner of Banks Mitchell is highly possible, because of the WBC ranking situation…..Yes we’re working on even better movements tighter defence and a lot of sparring up close and on the ropes and riding heavy shots. We expect all things so there for prepare for them. Also next time out Tyson will even be much faster than for Johnson. His weight will be around 17.8″ Peter Fury said to FightHype.com’s Scott Smith, check out what he had to say.
SS: Thanks for taking the time for the interview and congratulations on the recent victory over Kevin Johnson. I have seen Tyson tweeting about possible opponents, is there any news on his next opponent?
PF: We’re looking at various opponents Chaguev again. Pulev and 3 others on that list including Char.
SS: There was talk in December of a ring return for Tyson in March at Madison Square Garden, is there any developments on that arrangement?
PF Tyson will be out again late march in USA the venue I’m told will not be the garden. Due to TV slots etc and times screaming live for channel 5.
Impressive performance last time out against a very durable Kevin Johnson, what pleased you most about the performance?
PF: Thanks I’m most pleased the Johnson performance as he controlled it throughout and stuck to a game plan. Also in the mid rounds eased off the pressure and enjoyed just out boxing Johnson with. Skill he’s not shown before.
Some fans vented their frustration as the fight went on, I was in disbelief, I thought it was a brilliant tactical performance which shown Tyson can adapt his style when he needed to, so much so that even Johnson said after the fight that he had been tactically outclassed. In the corner between rounds it was evident Tyson was taking in what you was saying and demonstrated it in the ring, how easy was it for Tyson to adjust his style for that fight?
PF: Yes it’s not about pleasing the crowed when you have world class fighters in the ring with you. It’s about winning and taking no chances. Tyson adapted very well. He’s styal is a natural mover anyway. We was delighted with it and his best performance and opponent faces to date.
Johnson has proven in his career he is very durable which was definitely something in my opinion Tyson needed, so he can go 12 rounds as very few guys have been able to stay in there with him for 12 rounds. Was you pleased with his conditioning and decision making in the later rounds?
PF: Yes Johnson was very tough and his plan was for Tyson to start going for the kill holding his feet then blasting Tyson. Tyson’s condition is always very good. And the rounds were no issue for him. He could have boxed that pace for 20 rounds. And yes the advice given was accurate as Johnson was dangerous to the final bell. Not a man to lose consent ration with. Or get tired in their as Johnson will nail your ass.
I think the development Tyson has made under yourself has been superb, and has definitely shown his ability to adapt with a tighter defence… without giving too much away lol, is there anything else you are expecting Tyson to improve on in the near future?
PF: Yes we’re working on even better movements tighter defence and a lot of sparring up close and on the ropes and riding heavy shots. We expect all things so there for prepare for them. Also next time out Tyson will even be much faster than for Johnson. His weight will be around 17.8.
There have been a few opponents thrown around for the next fight with Tyson, is there anybody in particular or any style you would like Tyson to fight next providing a world title shot does not come?
PF: Yes I want good top ten fighters for Tyson that he will develop from. Not push overs. If I think Tyson’s going to KO an opponent I will pick another as I’m interested in Tyson getting rounds. Not looking good with quick KOs.
Banks vs Mitchell 2 is up soon, who do you fancy in that one, and is there a possibility of the winner of that facing Tyson?
PF: Yes the winner of Banks Mitchell is highly possible, because of the WBC ranking situation. I fancy Banks to be fair as again Mitchell faced no one decent and Banks can Box and is clever also. I rate Banks as one of the top Heavyweights in the mix right now and I like the guy. Gentleman.
It is suggested that Tyson will meet the winner of Arreola and Stiverne, do either of those guys interest you?
PF: Yes the winner of Arreola-Stiverne we will take. It’s about getting Tyson mandatory. That’s our aim and to do that we must face these guys and were ready for it.
It seems impossible to mention Tyson without the name David Price being mentioned and vice versa, I will be no different lol… with both men seemingly on a collision course in the coming years, What have you made of David’s recent performances?
PF: David prices performances have all been spot on. You can only beat what’s in front of you and their doing right now by stepping him up as he’s learning nothing from those fights only confidence.
Thompson is next up for Price, how you see that going?
PF: I see Thompson as a shot fighter with no chin and 42. But can be awkward behind that jab. If you let him. Price has to show him no respect and close him down with heavy shots and he will fold no problem.
When I spoke to you before, we both shared the same view that Price vs Fury is too soon. Yes it would be exciting, but financially, and from a career point of view I think it would be bad business to get the fight on this year. When one or both capture a world title, and enhanced their reputations over in the USA, surely that would be the opportune time with more of a story to tell, what are your thoughts?
PF: Yes I agree let them establish themselves in the states and then fight each other.
I pray they both keep on track for that showdown.
I know Tyson is eager to fight either Klitschko brother, how soon are you hopeful that fight can happen, and have there been any talks between the two camps?
PF: Yes the Klitchko camp has spoken with us and Tyson is ready to step up. But they are hard Buisness men and for this reason we want the mandatory no 1 slot. So there can be no option but to fight and fairness to the fighter. But if them fights are on the table this year we will take them.
Amongst other things the conditioning improvement under yourself has been very noticeable, just how strict are you in times between camps, or do you relax and leave it to Tyson?
PF: No I usually keep Tyson in shape between fights. But over Xmas I let him totally rest and enjoy himself. He came back in camp with 6 weeks off at 19 st 8.
This is the 2nd week back and he’s already down to 18.8. But from now on his weight will be kept below 18 throughout the year and rest will be light work outs but not rested all together.
Are there any other fighters that you are working with that you want to draw attention to for people to follow?
PF: Yes follow @hughiefury.
He’s the current junior world HW champion and will be doing big thing this year. He’s Tysons full time sparring partner and they live together in camp as we’re all one family.
