Moments ago WBO World Lightweight champion Ricky Burns stopped rival Kevin Mitchell in devastating fashion in the 4th round to retain his World lightweight championship. In what has been a friendly rivalry between the two British men, it was Scottish man Burns who emerged victorious on this night to improve his record to 35-2 from 37 contests after knocking Mitchell down twice inside the fourth round in what was an action packed fight. A close first round and a cagey opening with both men looking to work their openings but towards the end of the round they exchange blows, with Mitchell opening up and catching Burns who comes back well with a good right hand. Mitchell just sneaks it.

Burns is moving well, looking to work different angles and is having success with the right hand. A strong round from Burns who is in control of this round and right hand stunned Mitchell which has the crowd on it’s feet but Mitchell shrugs it off. An action round.

A good start from Burns who is really in control of this fight, good movement to avoid Mitchell’s shots whilst countering with a couple of decent right hands. KNOCKDOWN as both men exchange in the centre of the ring and a short left hand from Burns sends Mitchell, he takes his time to get to his feet to regain his senses and answers the 8 count. Burns looking to go for the kill as Mitchell tries 2 stand and exchange. KNOCKDOWN Mitchell is caught with another right hand which wobbles him and another right hand which looked to be round the back of Mitchell as he was leaning forward sends him face down on the canvas Mitchell answers the count, but gets pressured against the ropes,and referee stops the fight with 1 second remaining of the round.
