Guillermo Rigondeaux, a brilliant tactician. A boxing purist’s definition of a truly elite professional boxer with unmatched amateur credentials. Undefeated with a 72% K.O record in one of the more popular divisions in boxing (super bantamweight).
So why did his own promoter recently make the denigrating statement that “The only way to make Rigondeaux a household name is if Fidel Castro came over and co-promoted with me.”
For starters he said it because he can get away with making comments like that in a room full of yes men. Rigondeaux’s promoter also said that because ‘El Chacal’ mystifyingly and mind bogglingly renewed his contract with him.
Hence my question…why Rigo, why? Was it because the Faustian deal involved the prospect of a fight with Nonito Donaire? If the chance of a clash with ‘the Filipino Flash’ was the impetus then it would appear that was a mirage.
The mainstream argument against Donaire vs. Rigondeaux seems to be that Guillermo Rigondeaux would kill any interest that people would have in the match. I’m a simple man and as simple folk are wont to do, we try to find the simple logic in things. If a boxing match can be made between Nonito Donaire and a string of much less than well known opponents, then what about Rigo? Does my Cuban brother have leprosy or something? They’re even with the same promoter!
Very few, if any, boxers were stars from day one. The argument that Rigondeaux just doesn’t have what it takes to attract crowds is disingenuous, at best. If he continues to be buried on the undercard then how will he be noticed? If most of the boxing press weren’t the myopic bunch that they are then maybe they could be relied upon to raise his profile, but that’s asking too much.
Unfortunately that leaves me with the haunting question…why Rigo, why?
