Legendary trainer Roger Mayweather, trainer of undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr shares his thoughts on the story that his brother Floyd Mayweather Sr is about to work with Victor Ortiz.
Ortiz is coming off the back of two stoppage defeats, firstly a fourth round knockout defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr which was then followed a defeat to Josesito Lopez in which Ortiz retired in his corner due to a broken jaw with Ortiz ahead on all three judges scorecards. The defeat and resulting injury prevented Ortiz from stepping in the ring on September 17 against Saul Alvarez which was scheduled to be on PPV.
Ortiz currently possesses a record of 29-4-2, with 22 knockouts. Nobody questions the power Ortiz possesses but questions will always be asked about his mental frame of mind and his heart, with the latest withdrawal from a fight following the well publicized 2009 submission to Marcos Maidana in what was a war. Ortiz walked away from that fight in the 6th round despite being ahead on all three cards, and that is a demon that has lived with Ortiz since especially in the eyes of the media.
There is no question Floyd Mayweather Sr is a great trainer and has been credited with some of the great work with his son, along with other great fighters, such as Chad Dawson, Ricky Hatton, Joan Guzman and Oscar De La Hoya. Despite this, brother Roger does not believe it matters who trains Ortiz as it is Ortiz that has to step in the ring, implying that something is missing with Ortiz and states there is no way he would ever beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. Check out the video
