As we all exhale and relax from the two exciting bouts that occured this past Saturday, other than the questions about Amir Khan’s possible retirement and whether or not David Haye will dance off with Vitali Klitschko, there are snippets of news breaking, and comments from fighters, managers and promoters that can certainly get minds thinking and mouths talking. Here is a quick round-up of some of the main talking points in the world of boxing today.
THE RETURN OF THE COBRA
IBF super-middleweight champion, Carl Froch has announced that he will return to the ring on either the 3rd or 10th of November in Nottingham. As things stand, there are three names in the running to face Froch, but it is likely Carl will only have a significant interest in one of those names. The three fighters on the short list are thought to be American Kelly Pavlik, Thomas Oosthuizen and Mikkel Kessler. Froch, naturally, wants Kessler. It’s an easy fight to sell, and by all accounts there should be no problems in making it become a reality. This will be Froch’s ninth word title fight in a row, and he will be hoping to defend his championship belt succesfully before re-matching Lucian Bute early next year.
ORTIZ SPLITS WITH TRAINER DANNY GARCIA
It was perhaps on the cards after Ortiz’ shock defeat to Josesito Lopez at the end of June. In a post-fight interview, immediately after the fight had finished, Ortiz commented that he had a broken jaw but his trainer wanted him to continue. That, more than likely, put the wheels in motion for an inevitable split. It would appear that there was a lack of trust from both Ortiz, and Garcia. When there is no trust, then there is no relationship. Who knows where Ortiz will go now, but it’s probably not high on his list of priorities considering he’s out of action for a while with a broken jaw.
ASHLEY THEOPHANE WANTS KHAN
Former British light-welterweight champion Theophane has thrown his name into the mix as a potential ‘come-back’ opponent for Amir Khan. Theophane, who dropped a split-decision to the man who disposed of Khan in 4 rounds on Saturday night, wouldn’t be a bad opponent for Khan to consider. The fight will draw in the UK, and although Theophane did lose in his last fight, he is recognised as the best 140lb fighter at domestic level.
MAIDANA V SOTO-KARASS ON UNDERCARD OF CANELO V LOPEZ
After Maidana lost a unanimous decision at the hands of Devon Alexander in his first fight in the welterweight division, it was widely thought that ‘Chino’ would drop back down to 140lbs. However, that is not the case and Maidana has since vacated his WBA light-welterweight championship and will once again campaign at 147 against Soto-Karass in a 10 round contest. It should make for an entertaining fight – it is Maidana – and there will be a keen sense of intrigue to see how he is doing under new trainer, Robert Garcia.
POVETKIN INTERESTED IN HAYE BOUT
Alexander Povetkin’s manager, Vladimir Hryunov, reportedly wants to match his fighter with David Haye in the future. Povetkin, who holds the WBA heavyweight championship, has a mandatory defence of his title before a fight with Haye can be arranged. Kalle Sauerland, Povetkin’s promoter, was in London for the Haye v Chisora fight on Saturday and had a conversation with Haye’s team. I guess it will come down to whether or not Haye is hungry to fight anyone other than Vitali, but on a personal level I like the sound of this fight a whole lot more than seeing Haye v Klitschko.
DAVID PRICE WILLING TO FACE CHISORA
Current British heavyweight champion, David Price has expressed an interest in fighting former world title challenger Dereck Chisora. “A fight with Chisora would create interest and if the fans wanted to see it, I’d be happy to take part” Price told BBC Sport. There is a lot of ‘ifs and buts’ surrounding any fight with Chisora being made as he is unlikely to regain a license with the BBBoC (British Boxing Board of Control) any time soon.
