WEEKEND IN BOXING 11,12,13 JAN.: RAMOS/RIOS; WILLIAMS/MOLINA; PEREZ/FORBES; WILLIAMS/SMITH; ARNETT/QUARLES; GONZALES/MOUTON; GAUSHA/SCHMITZ

The boxing calendar is definitely warming up.  ESPN2/ESPN America, Showtime’s ShoBox and Fox Deportes will bring the pain this weekend.  Starting off will be Dannie Williams vs. John Molina and Brandon Gonzales vs. Don Mouton on ESPN2/ESPN America.  Showtime’s offering a free preview weekend (to American viewers), which means free ShoBox tonight.  The featured matches are Ronny Rios vs. Rico Ramos and Daquan Arnett vs.  Brandon Quarles.  Fox Deportes’ latest edition of ‘Golden Boy Presents’ has Johan Perez vs. Steve Forbes, Thomas Williams vs. Jason Smith and well regarded Olympian, Terrell Gausha vs. Kenneth Schmitz.

Read on for the full ‘Weekend in Boxing.’

As always, this is some of what’s being televised and what I’ll try my best to watch.

FRIDAY 11TH JANUARY (SAT. A.M. 12TH):

ESPN2/ESPN America – 9:00 p.m ET/ 02:00 GMT

‘Dangerous’ Dannie Williams (22-2-0) vs. John Molina (24-2-0).  Lightweights, 10 rounds.

-John Molina and Dannie Williams are arguably in similar stages of their professional careers.  Their records, including KO percentages of over 70%, are alike too.  John Molina even beat a guy that Dannie Williams lost too (Hank Lundy), but that might mean absolutely nothing when they step into the ring.  If neither boxer is reckless then this should be a close one, except if someone gets stopped, which is definitely possible.

Brandon Gonzales (16-0-0) vs. Don Mouton (12-4-1).  Super middleweights, 8 rounds.

- Brandon Gonzales is the undefeated boxer with an excellent amateur background, but Don Mouton has won three in a row and has never been stopped.  Mouton was inactive for two years (2010 and 2011), which helps explain why he only has 17 pro. fights even though he’s 34 years old.  Mouton was also campaigning at 160lbs in 2012.  It’s going to be quite hard for Mouton to win this one.

Showtime’s ‘ShoBox: The New Generation’ – 11:15 p.m. / 04:15 GMT

Rico ‘Suavecito’ Ramos (21-1-0) vs. Ronny Rios (19-0-0).  Featherweights, 10 rounds.

- Rico Ramos’ sole loss was to the man from Cuba, Guillermo Rigondeaux.  Ronny Rios is young and wants to make the most of his ‘Showtime.’ Rios has also campaigned at featherweight while Ramos has traditionally been a division lower.  The age difference is only three years, so that won’t be a factor, but experience and Ramos’ moving up in weight might be.  Ramos has a solid amateur background and has faced an arguably higher level of professional opposition than that faced by Rios.  Should be another good one!

Daquan Arnett (9-0-0) vs.  Brandon Quarles (9-0-1).  Light middleweights, 8 rounds.

- Daquan Arnett and Brandon Rios are both 9-0 with Arnett being the favourite.  Arnett might (should) have too much quality for Quarles, but one never knows…

SATURDAY 12TH JANUARY (SUN. A.M. THE 13TH)

SATURDAY 12TH JANUARY (SUN. A.M. THE 13TH)

Fox Deportes ‘Golden Boy Promotions Presents’ – 10:00 p.m. ET / 03:00 GMT

Johan ‘el Terrible’ Perez (15-1-1) vs. Steve ‘2Pound’ Forbes (35-11-0).  Welterweights, 10 rounds.

-Johan Perez lost for the first time against the resolute Pablo Cesar Cano in his last match.  Steve Forbes is a veteran test, but at this stage of his career, it’s doubtful how much of a threat he poses to the much younger Perez. If Perez fails this test, then it’ll definitely be an uphill battle to reestablish himself as a legitimate contender.

Thomas Williams (11-0-0) vs. Jason Smith (8-1-0). Light heavyweights, 8 rounds.

-Thomas Williams and Jason Smith have stopped most of their opponents.  Williams seems to have the advantage in quality of opposition faced over Smith.

Terrell Gausha (1-0-0) vs. Kenneth Schmitz (2-5-0).  Super middleweights, 4 rounds.

-Terrel Gausha continues the transition from the amateur ranks to the professional level.  Kenneth Schmitz will definitely surprise me if he wins.
