This ‘Weekend in Boxing’ is slower than me in calculus class. The paucity of televised boxing is understandable since Christmas is next week. That doesn’t mean that what’s on offer isn’t any good. Boxing in America returns to network (terrestrial) TV and this time it’s NBC. Featured boxers Tomasz Adamek vs. Steven Cunningham, meet in a rematch of their clash from 2008. New York city heavyweight, Tor Hamer, faces Ukrainian Vyacheslav ‘Czar’ Glazkov on the undercard.
Read on for the full ‘Weekend in Boxing.’
As always, this is some of what’s being televised and what I’m watching.
SATURDAY 22ND DECEMBER:
NBC – 4:00 p.m ET/ 21:00 GMT
Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek (47-2-0) vs. Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham (25-4-0). Heavyweights, 12 rounds.
-Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham are the same age, so don’t mind the difference in the no. of pro. bouts. Cunningham also has a solid amateur background. Adamek won a very close (debatable?) split decision over Cunningham in 2008 when they were both cruiserweights. Tonight’s boxing match is at heavyweight. The first thing that comes to mind is does the higher weight increase the likelihood of a K.O.?
Tor Hamer (19-1-0) vs. Vyacheslav ‘Czar’ Glazkov (13-0-0). Heavyweights, 8 rounds.
-NYC’s own Tor Hamer and Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Glazkov are on the edges of the heavyweight landscape. Hamer’s victory, in the ‘Prizefighter- Heavyweights’ final, over Kevin Johnson was a move in the right direction. Glazkov comes from a boxing nation and has a chance to introduce himself to the broader boxing public on American network TV.
