Boxing fans have a big boxing weekend to look forward to, especially here in Europe! We will see th undisputed world heavyweight champion return to the ring against a very game opponent seeking revenge, Britain’s own promising heavyweight returns to the ring with the son of a legend on the same bill looking to build on his growing reputation, and is Sheffield’s own special one ‘On The Edge Of Glory’?
Kell Brook will look to take his perfect professional record to 28-0 with a victory over American Carson Jones. Jones off the back of an impressive knockout record has almost as many knockouts as Brook has had fights and will almost certainly be Brook’s toughest test to date. Nobody has attempted the sort of mind games with Brook as Jones has, and up to now in his career Brook has barely lost a round, so it will be interesting to see if Jones can push Brook off the edge of glory and continue on his own path or whether the special one can deliver the knockout he is promising in front of his hometown fans.
Sparks certainly flew at the weigh in this afternoon when both men tipped the scales. Brook coming in at 146 pounds and 10 oz with the American Jones at 146 pounds and 6 oz. When the two went head to head for their customary face off it appeared to be Brook who made the first move, leaning his head in to the face of Jones, which certainly rattled Jones as the two exchanged words.
Chris Eubank Jr is a young man who is very closely monitored by the boxing world in particular in the UK and he takes to the ring Saturday evening against Brumme Terry Carruthers. Carruthers tipped the scales slightly heavier at 11 stone 8 pounds and 10 ounces with Eubank Jr weighing in at 11 stone 8 pounds and 9 ounces. Will Eubank Jr enhance his reputation with a glowing performance or can Carruthers throw a spanner in the works?
Wladimir Klitschko returns to the ring after recording his 50th career knockout against Jean-Marc Mormeck but this time faces a slightly tougher opponent, a natural heavyweight in Tony Thompson. Of course both men are accustomed to each other with Klitschko inflicting Thompson’s career loss and remains the only man to stop Thompson in his 38 fight career. Mandatory challenger Thompson will hope for a better result this time after citing a knee injury as the cause for his defeat in the first fight. Klitschko weighed in at a career high 249 .12 lbs with Thompson coming in at his lightest for 5 years with a weight of 244.72lbs.
British Heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury returns to the ring after taking out Martin Rogan earlier this year. Fury who will be looking for an impressive performance to catapult him into the world title picture weighed in at 17 stone 7 pounds and 8 ounces with Vinny Maddalone coming in at 16 stone 8 pounds and 8 ounces. Fury fights are often exciting, but will it be enough to make the top guys of the division come calling?
